'PUSHING YOUR BOUNDARIES'
August 14 - September 13, 2020

'LET IT BE

'LET IT BE' was developed as part of my ‘In Neutral’ series. It really did push my boundaries as I started in a completely different direction. The texture was not working so I literally ripped it off, sanded it, added more texture via medium and fibres. Took that off. This process went on and on, till finally I decided to 'let it be'.

'LIGHT AND SHADOW'
24"x48"

‘Light and Shadow’ diptych is from my ‘In Neutral’ series. It was created as one but could be installed separately as each piece has a strong focal point and gestural marks. I was honoured to receive third prize. This piece was selected along with two others to be part of this exciting show. There was a virtual opening via Zoom on Facebook Live on August 06, 2020. Please see full image below.

'LIGHT AND SHADOW'

‘Light and Shadow’ diptych is from my ‘In Neutral’ series. It was created as one but could be installed separately as each piece has a strong focal point and gestural marks. To date this is my highest recognition. This piece was selected out of 392 entries from artists worldwide and only 59 were accepted for inclusion in the physical gallery exhibition. A publication featuring all the artists, their biographies and statements is part of this esteemed show.

'Annual International Mail-In Art Exhibition' AIMAE  I had three pieces in this show!
'A ROSE BY NAME'

A rose is a stunningly beautiful flower and such an inspirational part of literature. I was inspired by the following quotes:“That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet.”  from 1594 Act-II, Scene-II of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. "Rose is a rose is a rose” appears in Gertrude Stein’s 1913 poem called "Sacred Emily”. “The rose is a rose / And was always a rose”  from Robert Frost’s 1928 poem. The rose in my story is a Black Rose which is dark shades of purple, maroon and red. The colour black has been synonymous with death and mourning. It is considered the colour of sadness, bereavement, farewell, loss and mortality, but it can also symbolize rebirth in certain cultures. We are at a time in history where we are experiencing world pandemic death and extreme sadness, but ultimately we hope for rebirth and change.

'Desire Paths'  My story for this painting is about desire paths or desire lines, as they are more formally known in urban planning. They are well worn pedestrian pathways that are created by many individuals  taking a short cut. There are many desire path names, some are free will way, social trail, game trail, use trail, bootleg trail, and even pirate path. In creating this painting, from an aerial perspective I found many paths emerging all on their own. The beauty of abstract art.

'IF YOU GO DOWN to the WOODS'
I created this abstract without any intended outcome. When I assessed it, I thought about the woods and was influenced by the "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" song by American composer John Walter Bratton, written in 1907, and lyrics added by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy in 1932. Today it still remains popular as a children's song and has been recorded by many artists over the decades. My story is a colour palette representing an abstract forest with invisible teddy bears. I left out the teddy bear symbol which often represents child-like innocence. During covid I have missed care free moments, especially ones from my childhood. Social distancing is not the human way; it has been difficult and sad.
